What is a Democratic School?
A democratic school is a school where students are trusted to take responsibility for their own lives and learning, and for the school community. At such a school, students choose their own activities and associate with whom they please. If courses are offered, students are always free to take them or not. Most such schools accept students across a wide range of ages (commonly age four through the late teens) and do not segregate students by age, so that students can learn from interacting with others who are older and younger than themselves.
What is a typical day like?

A typical day in our school begins with our morning meeting. The meeting begins promptly at 9 am so we encourage all students to be on time if they would like to attend. We discuss new rules, policies, classes, holiday events and other festivities, and schedules. Following the morning meeting, our morning classes begin. Classes are offered daily from 9:30-12:00. Students are always free to attend class or not. Our morning work cycle from 9-12 and all formal classes are offered during this time. Students create their work plans on Monday mornings so they can manage their own time. Students are free to eat anytime and go outside anytime. After 12, they are free to do almost anything!

What classes are currently offered?
We currently offer Guitar and Ukulele lessons (through Angelico Violin), Math, Geography, Philosophy, and Ethics. More classes will be added in September based on students interests.
Do you allow video games?
At this time, we do not allow video games at Hatched during school hours. We do allow before care and after care students to play if they wish. All students are welcome to come to school 30 minutes early and stay 30 minutes late if they would like to have time to game with their friends.
How are classes formed?
Classes are formed when a student expresses in interest in a subject and there are no available resources online to learn independently. The student will create a sign-up sheet and once they have 5 committed students, we will start the class.
How do I know this school will be a good fit for my child?
Democratic Schools are an excellent choice for most students. When young people in our culture are granted the freedom and opportunity to educate themselves, outside of the boundaries of traditional school, they generally do so fully and joyfully. Through their everyday engagement with life, and especially through their free play and exploration, they acquire the skills, knowledge, and values needed for success in our culture.
